2012 Junior Heart Board Awards

The Heart Society of Gaston County recently awarded the Samuel B. Johnson Scholarship to Hannah Broome. Hannah Broome was born prematurely at 32 weeks with a congenital heart defect called a double outlet right ventricle which was surgically repaired at 4 months of age. She spent 5 months in a neonatal intensive care unit before ever coming home for the first time. She wanted to give back to the Heart Society because of her health history. During her junior year at Piedmont Community Charter School she started a Junior Heart Board at her school. Starting this club allowed her to give back to the community with service and also educating others about heart health. She served as President during her Junior and Senior years, leading their club in organizing service projects in the community and volunteering for the Heart Society. Hannah will attend North Greenville University.

The Naomi Cunningham Service Award was presented to two outstanding students, Taylor Purkey and Adam Polk.

Taylor Purkey, who is a student at Gaston Christian School, served as the Secretary for their Junior Heart Board and participated in numerous service projects. She volunteered more service hours than any of the members in her club. Her advisor says that she has a true servant’s heart and she will be an incredible asset helping lead their club again next year.

Adam Polk served as the Vice President of Ashbrook’s Junior Heart Board. He helped organize a variety of service projects for their members and actively participated in the projects, leading the other members by example. He also volunteered at Heart Society events. Adam’s advisor describes him as dependable and ambitious, both qualities that have been instrumental in the success of Ashbrook’s Junior Heart Board.

The Junior Heart Board is a service organization for teens that encourages a heart healthy lifestyle and promotes volunteerism. Membership is open to any in student grades 9 through 12 in Gaston County. For information on how to join, please call the Heart Society at 704-865-1214.

2011 Open Heart Open Golf Tournament

The 22^nd Open Heart Open Golf Tournament was held on Thursday, November 3^rd at the Gaston Country Club. The Heart Society will use 100% of the proceeds for Medication Assistance, Cholesterol and Blood Pressure Screenings, and Cardiovascular Health Education in Gaston County. Thanks to an outstanding committee of volunteers, the Tournament was very successful with a record number of 121 players!
